ARCHEOLOGICAL SITE GRADIŠTE

It is located about 7 km northwest of Kikinda, in the direction of Idojos. It is a fortified settlement with ramparts from the land of the land, known as the “Slovenian town”. It was still inhabited in Neolithic, and with interruptions the life took place until the early Middle Ages. The remains of the Neolithic settlement were found above the very mouth of the river, at the narrowest and highest point of Gradiste and in the surrounding area. In the older housing horizon there are ceramics of old-age and ravine-tordogenic phases. In the younger stratum there is a horizontal house with vinic and prototype material. In the wider area of ​​Gradiste, not far from the aforementioned Neolithic settlement, the remains of a fortified settlement from the end of the bronze or the beginning of the Iron Age were found. It is raised between two shallow watercourses. It is circular in shape and covers an area of ​​about 5 ha. On the east side of the ramparts there is a main entrance,and on the west side there was another wall to the waterfront. Excavation is a 3.5 m deep defensive trench. In the central part of the fortification, ceramics belonging to the transition period of the end of the bronze and the beginning of the Iron Age were found. Based on the shape and manner of decoration, the material is given in the group Bosut III / b, c. System excavations were carried out between 1947 and 1949.
